How to sell your boat ?
Our tips
As part of the Sunbird International Yacht Sales Yachts network, MED’IN BOATS has all the tools and know-how to sell your boat better and faster, thanks to our international communication network. Our priority is that the transactions take place in mutual confidence, respecting the interests of the buyer and the seller.
Our mission is to always live up to the trust placed in us by our clients for the sale or purchase of their boat.
Step 1: Define the selling price of the boat!
In the used boat market, it is very important to define the selling price of the boat. The objective is to present the best offer, adapted to the current market. This is the key factor in attracting contacts with potential buyers and securing the sale.
Step 2 : Visit of the boat
Our team visits all the boats, before putting them up for sale. During the visit, our brokers bring back all the necessary information for the constitution of the boat’s file. In particular: the history, the inventory of the boat, as well as the photos and videos. The objective of the visit is to be able to communicate to potential buyers with clarity, precision and transparency.
Step 3 : Presentation of the boat
To ensure the smooth running on the day of the expertise and therefore the sale of your boat, it is essential to present it well.
How to prepare your boat?
• Clean the different parts of your boat, even the least visible ones.
• Sails must be neat, clean and in good condition.
• The fairing must have been done recently.
• The deck must be clean and tidy.
• Wood and stainless steel must be clean
• Hold, bottom and storage are cleaned and sanitized. Think about the bad smells and use a deodorizer.
• The fridge, cooler and/or freezer must be clean and operational.
The stove is operational and cleaned.
– The toilet and shower are working and clean.
– The on-board electronics and navigation instruments are in working order or reported as broken.
– The boat’s engine must not be dirty, full of oil or leaking. It must be up to date with maintenance.
It is normal that a used boat has some defects. It is imperative to mention them in order to avoid any unpleasant surprises at the time of the purchase decision.
Step 4 : Documents of the boat for sale
In order to enhance the value of the boat and to reassure the buyers, we need, from the start, the necessary documents from the owner:
– Purchase invoices, replacement invoices, maintenance invoices.
– Summaries of work or expenses carried out.
– Copies of previous appraisal reports if available.
– Copy of the charter deed.
– Copy of the depreciation table if the boat is under lease.
– CE conformity certificates. The more documents we have, the more confidence we give to the buyers.
Step 5 : The non-exclusive mandate
Within the framework of a non-exclusive mandate, you keep the freedom to :
Sell your boat yourself.
Sell your boat through another professional.
However, the mandate commits the owner (or the LOA lessee) to a “public” sale price which must be identical for all the ads published.
This type of mandate can be the source of complex situations, in particular when two professionals identify the same client, and neither of them will want to lose the mandate AND the client. Multiplying the number of professionals has little interest, since MED’IN BOATS already broadcasts the ads on all possible channels.
Step 6: The exclusive mandate
Within the framework of a central agent mandate, you grant an exclusivity to MED’IN BOATS :
We commit ourselves to “open” this exclusive file to co-brokerage. From then on, all the professionals have access to this file, and can present their clients. We will remunerate them by sharing the commission.
We remain the only interlocutor of the owner, we complete the file with 360° images and an extensive diffusion on social networks; we prepare the boat carefully.
The MED’IN BOATS team works in priority this type of file, able to engage more efforts thanks to this exclusive mandate. The efficiency is much higher than the non-exclusive mandate.
Step 7: Onboard visits with potential buyers
Our team carefully selects the clients and organizes the visits. We do our best to ensure that the visit goes smoothly, so that potential buyers take the time they need to visit the boat. During the visits, nothing is turned on (engine, electronics…) without a written authorization from you.
The tests cannot be scheduled at first. They will be part of the day of expertise, after signing a compromise sale.
Step 8 : Offers to buy your boat
We advise the buyer in formulating a realistic offer, acceptable to the owner. Following the visit, if the client wishes to buy the boat, he signs a provisional sale agreement with a down payment of 10% of the sale price.
The preliminary sales agreement defines the positions of each party, and protects the parties while waiting for the expertise, which generally lifts the suspensive condition.
Step 9 : Expertise
The expertise is a major step in the purchase process. It is essential that the buyer is informed of the real state of the boat concerned by an independent expert. As soon as the compromise is signed, the buyer is responsible for choosing, commissioning and paying the marine surveyor. In general, the survey takes place one to two weeks after the signing of the compromis.
The surveyor is responsible for the payment of the fees.At the end of the survey, the surveyor will advise his client about what to do next. The end of the survey day is sometimes devoted to a final negotiation, if unknown defects have appeared.
