The history of the Cranchi shipyard – a passion for boating passed down through the generations

The Cranchi shipyard is named after its founder, Giovanni Cranchi. He founded the shipyard in 1870 in Lake Como, Italy. His main activity is the construction of boats on demand. His customers are private individuals (fishermen) and also professionals (transport of passengers and goods).

Giovanni Cranchi, the founder’s grandson, bears his name and thus the interest of the boats like his grandfather. During the period 1930-1960, he built his first boats in a shipyard in Brienno.

In 1952, the activity of the yard shifted to the mass production of wooden boats. Giovanni Cranchi and his son Aldo launched a new wooden series in the motor and sailing range. It is thanks to Aldo’s innovative spirit that the design concept of the boats is as we know it today.

In 1970, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the shipyard, Aldo Cranchi decided to modernize and industrialize the production. Therefore, the production of boats becomes in fiberglass. With the assistance of Tullio Monzino, the yard moves to Piantedo. This is where the main production of the shipyard takes place until today.

In 1972, the new Pilotina model was a great success on the market – 1,550 units were built in 6 years. The following year, the launch of the Scout yacht was a great success. As a result, more than 500 units were produced in 5 years.

After that, in 1974, more than 1,000 boats left the yard. One of the most remarkable is the Rally20.

In the 1980s, the Cranchi shipyard expands its production capacity. Some of its biggest best sellers were launched on the market. These are : Hobby 20, Derby 700, Clipper 760, Start 21 and Cruiser 32.

At the end of the 90’s, the shipyard launches a test center in San Giorgio di Nogaro, in order to test the prototypes and to present its novelties to the customers.

The development of the Cranchi shipyard in the 2000s

In 2000, Cranchi opens a new, modern and spacious factory in San Giorgio di Nogaro. In 2003, Cranchi opens the Third Plant in Colico.

Cranchi opened a new Seventy Plant 4 in Rogolo in 2005, which is dedicated to the production of boats > 50 feet.

The following year, the Cranchi shipyard passed under the supervision of the 5th generation represented by Alessandra, Paola, Elena, Guido CRANCHI, accompanied by Franco Monzino.
