How was the first Lagoon catamaran model born?

The design of Lagoon catamarans was born in 1984, following the launch of a new workshop at the Lagoon shipyard. It is the JTA (Jeanneau Techniques Avancées), dedicated to racing boats. Several models of sailboats (trimarans and monohulls) are very successful and score victories in the competition sector. Among the best are the Formula 40 and Imoca.

Lagoon’s history begins at the time of a slight crisis in the sailing competition sector. At this moment, Florence Cathiard proposes a new innovative project to the JTA. The idea was to launch a beautiful and performing cruising catamaran on the market, based on VPLP Design plans. A few weeks later, the first Lagoon catamaran is born. It is the Lagoon 55, designed by Vincent Lauriot-Prévost and Marc Van Peteghem.

The objective was to create a range of cruising catamarans offering a higher level of comfort and performance than traditional monohulls.

The development of Lagoon catamarans during the 90s
The Lagoon 55 was criticized for the headroom and the size of the salon. Thanks to this, a new design idea was born. The shipyard launched the new Lagoon 57 and Lagoon 47. The new Lagoon 37 and Lagoon 42 are designed for the American charter market.

Then, Lagoon set a new goal for the development of catamarans. This includes the launch of a range of high performance catamarans, which are at the same time very modern and luxurious. Consequently, Lagoon presents the Lagoon 410 in 1997.

In the same way, Lagoon develops its activity by launching the first power catamarans: the Lagoon Power 43 and the Lagoon Power 44.

The evolution of Lagoon catamarans in the 2000s

In 2004, the shipyard presents the new Lagoon 440.

In 2008, the launch of the new Lagoon 420 Hybrid impresses with its innovative design and its 2 electric motors. The following year, the Lagoon 620 was born.

In 2010, three wonderful new catamarans were launched. These are: the Lagoon 560, Lagoon 450 Flybridge and Lagoon 450 Sport.

In 2014, Lagoon presents its spectacular 600hp trawler catamaran – the Lagoon 630 MY.

The fabulous Lagoon Sixty 5 catamaran will leave the shipyard in 2020.
